Water-Energy-Food Nexus

Food production related to efficient use of energy and water can be very challenging. The Water-Energy-Food nexus is full of complicated interdependencies. Decisions in one field will often have consequences for the other two.

What if we manage to exchange effective projects? For obvious reasons, not every approach will be effective in any city. Due to various context variables, such as climate, size of the city, connection with the region/agricultural areas, import dependency, and many other factors.

Via the Closer Cities urban research project, we aim to develop a better understanding of comparability between situations/cities and the exchangeability of solutions.

On 12 May 2022, during the world horticulture expo Floriade 2022, Closer Cities organized a WEF-nexus expert meeting in close collaboration with a team of experts from various organisations and knowledge institutes. This conference also related to the EXPO 2020 in Dubai. The pavilion of the Netherlands is literally built around the theme of water-energy-food. The full report on the WEF-nexus conference is available here

If you have a WEF-nexus project you would like to share with the online platform, please do so via the button you find on this page (‘submit WEF-nexus project’). On this WEF-nexus page, projects that are shared are only about the interdependencies and relations between Water, Energy and Food. Therefore, please note that if you would like to share a project related to the individual topic of water, energy, or food, you can do so via the button 'Share a project' in our main navigation. This page specifically serves for the sharing of projects on the relations between Water, Energy and Food.
