Minor Smart and Shared Cities: Urban Bridges

Leiden/The Hague/Delft/Rotterdam , Netherlands

On January 25, 2023, students from the minor Smart and Shared Cities of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for BOLD Cities will present the findings of their research project during the final plenary presentations. Over the past two months, students Amar Mešić, Anne Roos and Victoria De Rue have explored the opportunities and challenges for (smart) cities from a range of academic perspectives. The research theme of the project focuses on urban bridges and sheds light on specific aspects related to cross-border knowledge sharing.

Centre for BOLD Cities: "Smart City is a buzz word. Technological developments bring opportunities for the city, but also social discussion. How do citizens and administrators deal with the digitisation of the city? This raises not only technical, but also legal, economic, and behavioral science questions"

Research project as part of the final module of the minor

As part of the final module of the minor Smart and Shared Cities, students Anne, Amar and Victoria work on a project in collaboration with an external project commissioner until January 2023. The commissioners are Prof. dr. Jurian Edelenbos (Erasmus University Rotterdam) and MSc Robbert Nesselaar (co-founder Closer Cities) on behalf of Closer Cities, Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, and Vital Cities and Citizens. The students conduct independent and academic research based on a problem statement. As academic consultants, they report and present their findings. The project does not only reflect the problem of the urban environment as seen by the government or state but many other elements in the urban environment are included, such as infrastructure, various stakeholders, citizens, and their behaviour.

Urban bridges

The research theme of the project focuses on urban bridges and sheds light on specific aspects related to cross-border knowledge sharing. Amar, Anne and Victoria analysed the question: ‘What does a structured generic framework for knowledge sharing considering the challenge of urban bridge construction projects look like?’. The students have looked into a possible step-by-step approach and decision support tool for urban professionals and civil servants. Specifically, their aim is to create a procedure as part of the Knowledge Sharing (KS) framework for urban professionals and civil servants to share and seek knowledge. On January 25, 2023, Amar, Anne and Victoria will present their findings.

The minor Smart and Shared Cities is a cooperation between Leiden University, TU Delft and Erasmus University Rotterdam. The minor kicked off on September 5, 2022 and lasts until January 2023.
