The results of the project so far
The project has developed policy briefs on urban resilience, community resilience and organisational resilience, has written three bi-weekly inspirational updates for urban policy makers in Rotterdam and collected a number of case studies of how cities deal with shocks. At present, the project is supporting the development of policy criteria to enable policies and practices towards a more resilient and stronger Rotterdam.
What are specific, distinctive, strong elements in this project?
The three stages of resilience ( resist, recover and thrive) require different actors, actions and speed. While cooperation among these three stages is essential, it is not easy. Such a partnership demands different speeds: quick policy advice, quick applied research to feed policy making, and more fundamental long-term research and policy making to offer better and deeper policy advice.
Which specific lessons, do's and don'ts would you like to share? What would be suggestions for others when preparing or implementing the project in their own city?
The first is its explicit aim to learn from past experiences and learn by doing. Cities and citizens can learn from a crisis and develop innovative new ways of working and living.
Second is the cooperation between local government and universities, which enables innovation and learning. Rotterdam has actively engaging in research, in order to facilitate research-driven policies.
The third is that recovering from Covid-19 is combined with becocmng resilient for shocks such as climate change.
