Farm of the Future

At the Farm of the Future, we demonstrate and discuss how to produce food in a fully sustainable way in the near future. Sustainable means here: regenerative, productive and resilient. This type of farming is characterized by:
Closed-loop recycling; High levels of biodiversity and minimal environmentally harmful emissions

Why was this project started?

The project was started because of the urgently needed transition in food production. Optimization of the old system is not enough, a total new approach is needed to fulfill the ambitious multi-objective goals that were set for future farming.

The results of the project so far

The results of the project so far are that it strongly enhanced the discussion on how our future food system in urban areas like the Netherlands should look like. Moreover the project shows that multiple goals like zero emissions, high biodiversity, high productivity and a good farmers income can be combined in a all round farming system

What are specific, distinctive, strong elements in this project?

A very strong element of the project has showed to be the combination of a field lab an innovation program and a platform for dialogue

Which specific lessons, do's and don'ts would you like to share? What would be suggestions for others when preparing or implementing the project in their own city?

A close cooperation between the urban region and its 'rural backland' is necessary and give big chances for an all round sustainable food system. It relates to various aspects of sustainability like nutrient cycling, food security, water management/purification, recreation, landscape and biodiversity.
