Saving lives with GreenFlow for Emergency Vehicles in Merida

This project was started to reduce the travel time of emergency vehicles (E.V.) in Merdia, Mexico. The way the project works is as follows.

As soon as an E.V. switches on it's sirenes and blue lights, it will automatically receive absolute priority at all the traffic lights between it's current location and the location of the emergency.

Why was this project started?

To drastically reduce the travel time of 100 E.V. in Merida (Ambulances, Police Cars and Fire Trucks).

The results of the project so far

All the needed traffic light controllers are installed and E.V. have been equiped with an on board unit sending their position to a GPS database.
This GPS data is send to Peek Traffic FlowSense Clould environment.
The absolute priority for the EV is handled in the Cloud and then send to the Traffic Light Controllers in question.
This ensures that the E.V.'s will only encouter GREEN light at traffic light.

At the moment, several hunderd E.V.'s are using this in Merida already.
Scaling up to all EV on all intersections is currently being implemented.

What are specific, distinctive, strong elements in this project?

Absolute priority at traffic light is the savest and quickes way to get EV to an incident.
We believe this project will on avarge shave of minutes of travel time which we believe will save lives in situations where every second counts!

Which specific lessons, do's and don'ts would you like to share? What would be suggestions for others when preparing or implementing the project in their own city?

Connecting the existing Traffic Light Controllers of our partner Autotraffic/Vixionaire to our Clould environment was crucial here. Creating the proper interfaces was not complicated.
Another requirement is to have the topology of all intersections in our cloud environment. Depending on city size, this is a substantial bit of work for which used a specific toolkit to get this done.

Have others adopted, or shown interest in adopting, your idea in their own area?

Other cities in Mexico have shown an interest in this solution to our partner Autotraffic/Vixionaire.
Cities in other regions are also considering starting a similar project.
